This MyInfo sheet provides resources and tools for managers who experience bullying and harassment, who need to address bullying and harassment between staff, or who may be unwittingly contributing to an environment in which bullying and harassment takes place. Bullying and harassment is repeated, persistent behaviour generally associated with a power imbalance between the victim and perpetrator. It includes any inappropriate conduct or comments that a person knows or reasonably ought to have known would be humiliating or intimidating, with or without conscious intent. In our conversations with members, we have found that bullying and harassment occurs at all hierarchical levels, impacting excluded managers, unionized supervisors, rank and file staff, and at times executives. We have also found that workplace bullying varies considerably: it can range from overt behaviours (e.g., yelling) to subtle and hidden (e.g., occurs behind closed doors). This MyInfo Sheet will help readers understand what bullying is, the forms it can take, and the impacts of bullying on their physical and mental health. It also gives tips on how to prevent, recognize and address workplace bullying and harassment.
